Topic:

Enabling the Metaverse: The Role of Photonics in Immersive Worlds

Abstract: The metaverse promises to transform how we work, learn, and connect by creating persistent, immersive digital environments. At the foundation of this vision lies photonics, the science and technology of light which enables the displays, sensing, imaging, and connectivity that make immersive worlds possible. This webinar will explore how photonic innovations are driving the next generation of metaverse experiences, from ultra-high-resolution near-eye displays and holography to LiDAR-based spatial mapping, optical interconnects, and energy-efficient data centers powering large-scale virtual environments. We will discuss how advances in photonics intersect with enabling technologies such as AI, digital twins, and extended reality (XR), highlighting both current capabilities and future challenges. Special attention will be given to the opportunities for photonics researchers and engineers to shape immersive systems that are not only visually compelling but also scalable, sustainable, and inclusive. Participants will gain insight into the critical role of photonics in bridging the physical and digital worlds, and how this field can continue to illuminate the path toward a truly interconnected metaverse.
