Inclusive Intelligence: Women Driving Ethical and Responsible AI in Africa.
As artificial intelligence rapidly reshapes industries and societies, it is critical to ensure that its
development and deployment reflect the diverse realities of Africa. This panel, titled “AI for
Social Good: Ethical Innovation That Serves Everyone,” will explore how we can reimagine
AI to be more inclusive, ethical, and socially responsive.
The session will focus on three core areas: the prevalence and consequences of bias in AI
systems, the importance of inclusive and representative datasets, and the underrepresentation
of women and marginalized groups in AI ethics and decision-making processes. In many cases,
AI tools mirror existing social inequalities due to biased training data or the lack of diverse
voices in development teams. This panel will unpack how these challenges manifest on the
African continent and offer solutions rooted in equity and community engagement.
Importantly, the discussion will highlight the role of participatory design and co-creation
emphasizing how AI tools can and should be built with underrepresented users, not just for
them. From healthcare to education and justice systems, inclusive AI can drive meaningful
social impact only when it authentically reflects the needs and values of those most often
excluded.
Bringing together women AI ethicists, grassroots technologists, data scientists, and civil
society leaders, the panel will offer actionable insights on how Africa can lead in shaping AI
for good-grounded in fairness, inclusion, and dignity for all.
This session aligns with AFRICON’s vision to reimagine the future through the transformative
power of technology.
