IEEE DAY EVENT - III: Coordinated State Estimation of Power Transmission and Distribution Systems
The IEEE PES Student Branch Chapter at IIT Kanpur was honoured to host a highly insightful technical talk by Mr Neeraj Kumar Sharma on October 13, 2025 (17:00 to 18:00). The session delved into the critical and evolving topic of "Coordinated State Estimation of Power Transmission and Distribution Systems."
The session provided a detailed understanding of state estimation in both balanced and unbalanced transmission and distribution systems, emphasizing the importance of coordinated estimation for enhanced accuracy, reliability, and observability in modern power networks.

Biography:
Mr. Neeraj Kumar Sharma is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, with research interests in Power System State Estimation, Dynamic Line Rating Estimation and Digital Twins. He holds an M.Tech in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kanpur (2015) and a B.Tech in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from UPTU, Lucknow (2009).
Before joining PhD at IIT Kanpur, Mr. Sharma served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), Dehradun, and previously at MIT Meerut, NIT Meerut, and BIET Meerut, gaining extensive academic and research experience in power systems and energy technologies.
He is a recipient of the POSOCO Power System Award (PPSA) 2016 under the Master’s category for his work on “Observability Analysis and Topology Error Processing of Power Systems in the Presence of Hybrid Measurements.” Mr. Sharma is also a Certified Trainer under the National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) Level-6 for Power Distribution Engineers and Junior Engineers.
His research contributions include several papers in reputed journals and conferences such as IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, International Journal of Electrical Power & Energy Systems, and the National Power Systems Conference (NPSC).
He has been an active contributor to workshops and conferences, including the International Workshop on Smart Grid and Electric Vehicles (UPES & Purdue University Northwest, USA) and the ISTE STTP on Electric Power Systems organized by IIT Kharagpur under the National Mission on Education through ICT (MHRD).
