If you "don't understand people" and you "just want to understand people better", this seminar is for you.

Many of us technical professionals don't understand people as well as we understand technology. Yet our relationships with people have as much to do with effectiveness in our career as does knowing about technology. This seminar will show how to build good, lasting, effective relationships with your peers, managers, subordinates, and associates and colleagues.

This 4-hour introductory seminar covers the material from the book "The 7 Habits". See the abstract below for details.

This seminar is open to IEEE members, including student members, and their spouse/partner/significant other.

This seminar is presented by the IEEE Technology Management Council Southeastern Michigan Chapter .

Topic:

7 Habits of Highly Effective People -- Managing Inter-Relationships

All technical professionals understand technology well enough, but many have trouble understanding people and the importance of building inter-relationships. If you "don't understand people", and you want to "understand people better", this seminar is for you.

This seminar will introduce attendees to the material from author Stephen Covey's books " 7 Habits ", " Principle-Centered Leadership ", and " First Things First ".

Attendees will learn how to build good, lasting relationships instead of just manipulating people. We will discuss the principles of dependence, independence, and interdependence. We will explain how everyone has their own "circle of influence" and how to work within it to expand into your influence into your areas of concern. We will show how fourth-generation time management is the key to planning. Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in learning exercises.

Things to bring:
The books, if you have them (check with your local library). Note paper and pencil/pen. Your planner or planning calendar. Unobtrusive snacks and water for yourself. A list of the roles in your life, such as husband, wife, brother, sister, son, daughter, grandchild, parent, grandparent, worker, engineer, professional, manager, neighbor, IEEE member, student, and community volunteer. You will use this list during the course to start developing for yourself your individual goals and your personal mission statement.

Pre-Work:
Read the introduction to Stephen Covey . List your roles (see explanation above).

Target Audience:
This course is intended for engineers, technology managers, and engineering students. This seminar is useful for those that have not yet studied the "7 Habits material", or have only read some of the material. Attendees will get a chance to start developing their roles and goals and personal mission statement.

Mark is certainly not an expert in this area, but he has been studying this material and practicing these principles (in addition to other material) for over ten years. He will guide the audience through this material, share what he has learned over the years, and even discuss things that are missing.

Biography: Mark is currently the IEEE Technology Management Council (TMC) Chapter Chair, the Past Section Chair, and Region 4 East Area Support Chair. Mark has served on committees for several other professional organizations.

Mark was trained in teaching through a week-long Train-The-Trainer course as part of his employment as an engineer and Six Sigma Black Belt at a major auto company. He is an experienced trainer, leader, and mentor.
