Accelerating 6G Innovation Through IEEE 5G/6G Testbeds: Validating V2X and Emerging Vertical Use Cases
As the telecommunications industry advances beyond 5G toward the era of 6G, there is an increasing need for realistic experimentation environments capable of validating emerging technologies, architectures, and services before large-scale deployment. This lecture provides an overview of the key requirements, performance targets, and enabling technologies shaping future 6G networks, while highlighting the role of the IEEE 5G/6G Innovation Testbed as a global platform for accelerating research, innovation, and collaboration among academia, industry, governments, and standards organizations. The session will examine how open and federated testbed environments can support the development and validation of next-generation Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications, AI-native networks, digital twins, edge intelligence, Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC), autonomous mobility, and other emerging 6G vertical applications. Drawing on real-world deployments and ongoing standards activities, the lecture will demonstrate how testbeds enable interoperability assessment, performance validation, service assurance, and rapid prototyping of innovative services. In addition, the lecture will discuss lessons learned from deploying large-scale experimentation platforms and outline pathways for transforming research concepts into commercially viable solutions. Attendees will gain practical insights into the technologies, methodologies, and collaborative frameworks that are expected to drive the evolution of next-generation digital infrastructure and connected intelligent systems.

Biography:
Dr Anwer Al-Dulaimi is currently a Senior Strategy Manager of Connectivity and Industry 4.0 at Veltris, Toronto, Canada. He received the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from Brunel University, London, U.K., in 2012 after obtaining M.Sc. and B.Sc. honours degrees in communication engineering. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Toronto, sponsored by Blackberry’s advanced research team. In his current role, Anwer is developing and leading long-term strategic plans for adoption and implementation of 5G, 6G, and Industry 4.0 technologies. He is the chair of the newly established IEEE 5G/6G Innovation Testbed project working to develop a convergent testing platform for E2E network innovations. He is the chair of the IEEE 1932.1 ‘Standard for Licensed/Unlicensed Spectrum Interoperability in Wireless Mobile Network’. He is also representing Veltris in many industrial forums and collaborative projects. He has published many papers, edited books, and developed patents focusing on new generations of mobile networking technologies. He is the Editor of IEEE Future Networks Series on 6G published by IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazine and guest editor of many other IEEE series issues. His research interests include 5G/6G networks, cloud computing, IoT and cybersecurity. He is a Fellow of the British Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET), registered as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) by the British Engineering Council since 2010. He is a voting member of Mobile Communication Networks Standards Committee (MobiNet-SC) and IEEE VTS Distinguished Lecturer.
