IEEE Pikes Peak Event Notice

As part of its commitment to exploring technology in our daily lives, the Pikes Peak Section of the IEEE is pleased to present:

Beyond Hubble: The Next Generation of Space Telescopes

Recent servicing of Hubble gives hope for enhanced years of productive use. Mr. Vaughnn will place Hubble in two contexts: The broader use of space for science and the full use of the electromagnetic spectrum. With a focus on astrophysics, he will show how mankind is designing and targeting space telescopes to understand the "Big Picture" questions of the extent, history, and future of the Universe. Current and future gamma ray, x-ray, optical, and microwave missions will be summarized and put into context, including Hubble's successor, the James Webb Space Telescope. Other "Big Picture" questions that are being targeted include dark energy and gravity.

In 2007 David Vaughnn came to NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD where he leads the Optics Branch. The Optics Branch designs and builds optical systems for space flight instruments and spacecraft. The branch also is active in research and technology development. It is the largest branch at Goddard with about 60 civil servants and 30 contractors. Much of the current focus for the branch is the James Webb Space Telescope.

This presentation is open to all members of the public and will take place on Friday, October 9, 2009, at the Clarion Hotel Colorado Springs, at I-25 and Bijou Street Clarion Hotel Info
