IEEE Women In Engineering Affinity (WIE) affinity group of Hyderabad section organized an Industrial visit to RCI labs (DRDO), Hyderabad on 11 August 2014 from 10:00 A.M. to 01:00 P.M. Its main aim is to provide students with an opportunity to learn practically through interaction and helps them gain first hand information regarding the functionality of industry. 84 students from two Engineering colleges namely Geethanjali College and CVR Engineering college from Hyderabad and 5 professionals attended this industrial visit.
Firstly students were given necessary security instructions. The students were taken to the exposition hall and were shown a video about the various achievements of RCI in the past 25 years. Missiles like AGNI, AKASH, NAG, ASTRA, TRISHUL etc were developed at RCI,DRDO. Students were taken through a guided tour by Mr.V.V Subramanyum, Scientist at RCI. Students were explained about the outcomes of various labs at RCI viz., Control Systems lab, power systems ,etc collectively called Lab of Missile Technologies.
Students were then explained about actuators and their role in maintaining the trajectory of missile besides aerodynamic errors. Students were introduced to few machines like BLDC (Brush Less DC) motors, Servo valve, Hydraulic machines used in various missiles.
Role of Embedded On Board Computers and how different it is from the other embedded computers was also explained. Power Supply systems used in missiles were also shown and a brief introdution was given.
Mr.B.S. Rao, Scientist at RCI, then explained about seeker and its role in missile defence system of AAKASH. Students learned the application of Doppler shift in moving target analysis done in seeker. Students actively interacted with the scientist and cleared their doubts.
Students then visited the inner exhibits and viewed the prototypes of various missiles that were developed in RCI, DRDO.
After a short tea break, students were taken to some of the test facilities, where the different testing methods were followed to test the missiles compatibility with the environment conditions and its ability to withstand the shock and vibrations. Students were given a brief overview about the operation of various tests.
The students were then taken to the EMI/EMC test facility and where Mr.Sandeep, Scientist at RCI explained students about EMI and its threat to the functioning of missile and its subsystems. Various test platforms on which the performance of systems shall be studied to develop sufficient EMC which mitigate the EMI. The students then learned about threats due to ESD and measures taken to reduce it.
In all the entire visit was enlightening and by both the students and faculty and wished for more such visits in the future.
This visit enabled the students to get insight of the internal working environment of Research Centre Imarat (RCI) one of India’s premier labs of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), as well as useful information related to the practical aspects of the educational course which cannot be visualized in class room lectures and promoted interaction and networking among students and professional members.

This event was initiated and coordinated by Dr. Swarna Bai Arniker, Chairperson WIE AG IEEE Hyderabad section and Scientist ’E’, Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad. Mrs. G.Sree Lakshmi, M.C.Raju from Geethanjali College of Engineering and Technology and Mr.Appa rao and Mr.Suman from CVR College of Engineering Hyderabad also co-ordinated this visit respectively.
