[Legacy Report] The Challenges of Active Phased Array Design Development and Test
Active Phased Array Antenna Systems have come of age with the rapid introduction of high
reliability and predictable semiconductor devices and MMICs such as those based on GaAs and
GaN based technologies. However, the integration of these devices into practical phased array systems demands a range of integrated engineering skills. It is no longer sufficient to just be an antenna specialist. Skills across integrated system design, digital signal processing, control and monitoring, thermal and packaging, mechanical design, materials selection and processing, assembly and production techniques are required in addition to the traditional antenna design, modelling and test techniques for a complete, cost effective and successful active phased array solution. This discussion touches on a few of these areas and the issues involved.
