Title: Smart Grid - The Evolution of Faraday’s Vision and Passion for Electricity
Speaker: Dr. S. S. (Mani) Venkata
Date: 22nd September, 2014
Time: 5.30 PM (networking and Tea), Lecture starts at 6:15 PM.
Venue: PS Telugu University Auditorium, Next to Public Garden Namapally side gate, Hyderabad.
Abstract: In today’s world, electricity is truly the lifeline of mankind, fulfilling nearly all needs of the society that are increasing exponentially. In this context it is a real challenge for electrical engineers to keep up with these needs by maintaining utmost quality of power, its reliability and security, and all this at affordable cost to the consumers. While honoring Faraday’s invention of the Laws of Electromagnetic Induction in 1831 and keeping his vision and passion for electricity in mind, this presentation focuses on the evolution of the “Smart gird” during the past three centuries. The first part of the talk will focus on the critical developments from the 17th century until the present. The next part of the presentation will be devoted to the current status of the smart grid, its meaning and developments. In the third part, the direction of electricity growth to meet future societal needs will be explored. Finally the pressing issue of the global shortage of engineers will be addressed. In order to meet this need it is imperative that we excite and motivate young scientists and engineers to specialize in this field with proper educational training and mentoring programs.
