Event Details:
Date: 1st August 2015
Timings: 10:30 AM to 3:30 PM
Venue: ECE Seminar Hall, Room no. 5409, MJCET
Speaker: Mr. Syed Azher Hussain, MS KFUPM
IEEE PES, MJCET conducted ‘An Introduction to LATEX Workshop’ on August 1, 2015, in collaboration with IEEE CASS, MJCET. IEEE Student Branch MJCET as it plunged into the new semester. The objective of the workshop was to mix the crisp basics of LaTEX with a touch of hands-on conversance for the research interested candidates.
Brief-on Latex:
LaTeX is a high-quality typesetting system; it includes features designed for the production of technical and scientific documentation. LaTeX is the de facto standard for the communication and publication of scientific documents. It is available as free software.
LaTeX is used for the communication and publication of scientific documents in many fields, including mathematics, physics, computer science, statistics, economics, and political science. LaTeX uses the TeX typesetting program for formatting its output, and is itself written in the TeX macro language. TeX derives from the Greek: τÎχνη (skill, art, technique).
LaTeX follows the design philosophy of separating presentation from content, so that authors can focus on the content of what they are writing without attending simultaneously to its visual appearance. In preparing a LaTeX document, the author specifies the logical structure using simple, familiar concepts such as chapter, section, table, figure, etc., and lets the LaTeX system worry about the formatting and layout of these structures. It therefore encourages the separation of layout from content while still allowing manual typesetting adjustments where needed.
LaTEX is used by research groups (optimization-driven design) for all their professional research papers, publications, reports, compendiums, lab assignments, etc. across the globe. All major universities in the world use LaTeX as the standard format for research papers.
Event Summary:
The event embarked by a welcome note by Miss Sidra Ali, Secretary of IEEE PES MJCET. Latex workshop was like a welcome change for all the research interested candidates facilitated by IEEE SB MJCET. The speaker Mr. Syed Azher Hussain was introduced to the attendees. Mr. Mr. Syed Azher Hussain received his MS degree in Systems Engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) and BE degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Osmania University (MJCET). He worked as a Teaching/Research Assistant in Systems Engineering Dept., KFUPM. He published 2 research papers in international journals during the course of MS.
Mr. Syed Azher began with the basics of Latex; about latex, its usefulness and talked about the various softwares needed for Latex typesetting system.
The second session was especially wrought for the hands-on experience in order to facilitate each individual attending the workshop with the Latex Software.
He stressed on the point that every Latex document is, in fact, a program, and Latex is essentially a programming language. A sample IEEE template of LaTeX was provided to the participants. The Speaker also gave a few exercises to practice so that the participants could enrich a true pragmatic experience.
He also explained the usefulness of Latex for the engineering students pursuing Masters wherein they will have to publish at least one research paper, and for students who are interested in publishing research papers. TeX files (.tex) are lot smaller than .doc or .docx files. It gives you a high-quality typesetting (especially for math) and the ability to automate formatting. It gives a cross-platform compatibility (Can be used and shared on multiple platforms). It is easy to make templates (Reuse templates over and over again with minimal changes) and is absolutely free.
The event was concluded by presenting a memento to the esteemed speaker Mr. Syed Azher Hussain by Professor J.K. Nag as a mark of acknowledgement for his exceptional services in making this a successful and impactful workshop.
Mr. Raihan Siddiqui, Chairman, IEEE CASS MJCET, thanked the participants and the speaker for witnessing the proceedings of the event patiently. The Branch Counsellor of IEEE Student Branch MJCET, Dr. Arifuddin Sohel also announced that the participants should submit a document using LaTeX which will be reviewed by him based on which the certificates of appreciation will be awarded.
IEEE SB MJCET has always provided the unmatched standards in high quality technical knowledge. ‘Workshop on LaTEX’ brewed friendly service and outstanding ultimate experience for the research interested candidates.
The executive committee of IEEE SB MJCET sincerely expresses its gratitude for the complete dedicated guidance of Dr. Arifuddin Sohel, Branch Counsellor of IEEE Student Branch MJCET, and for making this workshop a truly intriguing experience.
