[Legacy Report] IEEE SNIST SB WIE STAR Program
The Annual Student-Teacher and Research Engineer/Scientist (STAR) Program was conducted by the IEEE Sreenidhi Institute of Science and Technology “Women In Engineering (WIE) Affinity Group on the 16th, 18th and 20th November 2015 at the Rampally Zilla Parishad High School by a small group of volunteers from the college, passionate about spreading the importance and knowledge of Engineering and technology to the younger generation of remote India.
The STAR Program was conducted during the eve of Children’s Day this year and was concerned with mentoring for the Government school students to continue their learning and pursue a career in Engineering.
The STAR Program 2015 followed a module consisting of two sessions, each session with duration of 1 hour for students of class 8 and 9 of the Rampally ZPHS(Telugu and English medium).
Each session dealt with different ideologies boosting up their confidence levels in the form of interactive talks, games, hands-on activities etc. The first day involved a small introduction on what actually the program is, awareness on Present day technologies and introduction to Engineering Sciences, Computers, and Electronics etc. The students were enlightened about different fields of Engineering, namely, Computer Science, Electrical and Electronics, Mechanical, Civil, Aeronautical, Biotechnology, etc. Also, students interested in the Life sciences and biology sector were explained about the importance of medicine, pharmacy and their role as doctors, researchers and Engineers.
Each branch of Engineering was deeply, yet simply explained to the enthusiastic students who were passionate and eager about pursuing a career in different areas and domains. Students showed great zeal for application-based learning rather than just learn through textbooks. The awareness on present day technology involving Microsoft Office, Internet, smart phone applications, mechanically operated cars, flight operations, electrical devices, IC’s, biomedical devices, microscopes and many more was much appreciated by the young minds and they were spell bound by the huge world of opportunities lying ahead of them.
The second day, i.e., 18th November was aimed at career building, communications skills, and time management. For the younger generation of remote India, it is absolutely necessary that they have clear focus about their future career and a way to accomplish their goals and aspirations. This session dealt with the different prospects of study after high school. The details of various groups such as Intermediate (MPC, BiPC, Commerce), Chartered Accountancy, Diploma and Polytechnic, etc were discussed. The kids were also guided in numerous other fields of their own interest such as IAS, IPS, Photography, CA, Biotechnology, Journalism, Aerospace, etc to name a few.
Time management was the main focus and the students were highly motivated to follow a time-table and maintain constant balance between sports and games and studies. The importance of “Early to bed, early to rise, makes a person healthy, wealthy and wise” was laid emphasis too.
As it was a program mainly to encourage women and girls, we also had a women-oriented session about safety, awareness and health issues. The girls were extremely overjoyed to question about various problems faced in their backward society and the volunteers were advising these students about how to cope up with such issues. Also, the girls were enlightened on the health issues and dietary plans for a healthy lifestyle. They were also taught to follow cleanliness.
The final day was a great surprise for the kids, who were taken for a field Trip to the Sreenidhi Institute of Science and Technology where the students had exposure and hands-on activities in the various laboratories of Engineering. They were astonished to observe highly organised technology and instruments of the Biotechnology, Mechanical, Electrical and Computer Science laboratories and were in awe at the facilities and infrastructure of Engineering colleges.
