Associate Professor Burke spoke about the various ways in which technology impacts on the society – from the physical shape and organisation of cities to the lifestyles and social relations of people. As such his lecture covered a broad range of topics from the history of the introduction of cars into Brisbane to the future of its public transport. His focus was particularly on disruptive technologies, for example electric and automated cars, and the use of drones in the in the delivery of goods and services. He also addressed the future implications of these technologies, for instance in terms of how they impact on the future funding of roads, the shape of cities and houses, and employment. Overall the lecture therefore reflected on the current and future implications of various transport related disruptive technologies for society.
