[Legacy Report] Amtrak's Cab Signal and ACSES System used on the Northeast
Amtrak’s cab signal system provides a safe means of operating more trains within a specified area at a safe distance. The foundation of the system dates back to the 1920s when the Pennsylvania Railroad owned and operated trains between New York City and Washington, DC. The Pennsylvania Railroad developed the four aspect cab signal system and later added speed control to enforce rulebook speeds. The system remained unchanged from its inception throughout the Penn Central years and into the formation of Amtrak. Due to some tragic events and Amtrak’s need to bring high speed rail service to the North East Corridor, Amtrak redesigned the cab signal system and introduced the Advance Civil Speed Enforcement System (ACSES).
