Algorithmic trading: New frontier in Technology and Finance

The silent growth of algorithmic trading has been one of the most powerful trends in securities and derivatives markets in recent years. Today worldwide more than 50% of the volume of total trading is done by algorithmic trading in real time. The 50% threshold was crossed recently and markets made a titanic shift in how stocks and commodities trading would be done presently and in the future.

A computer program is written that is based on historical trading data and set up to automatically place orders when a currency pair breaks through a set of parameters. This allows for execution at a much faster speed than a human could input and click through a trade online. In theory, that allows for better pricing and the ability to take advantage of smaller moves in markets.

The rise of algorithmic trading is due to two factors. The first factor is the increased availability of historical data. Today, we have a far more historical market data than we ever have. We can even access tick by tick historical data for any asset. The second factor is the increased computing power we can use to analyze this data. Computers have become cheaper and more powerful over time, and this has allowed market participants to make increased use of algorithms.

The power to analyze data historical or streaming and derive meaning or information is one of the oldest pursuits of mankind, sometimes even equated to the defining reason for man being on top of the food chain. Stock Markets are also a place of competition and a player with greater information has a distinct edge. If this player happens to be an algorithm then one of the ways by which it can gain advantage is by processing larger amounts of data, seeking latent relationships and forming decisions based on this information which can be tested and validated. Today Algorithmic trading is the new frontier where the best minds in software, hardware, finance and science are coming together.
