[Legacy Report] A Talk on IEEE Computer Society and its Benefits

Introduction: The Computer Society of IEEE – VBIT SB in collaboration with the Executive Committee of IEEE – ATRI SB has successfully conducted a session on ‘IEEE Computer Society and its benefits’ for the Computer Science and Information Technology students at VBIT on 05th March, 2016 i.e. Saturday.

Overview:

  • The session started with the introduction of Mr. Prasanth Mohan to the audience, which constituted IEEE Student Members from VBIT & ATRI, also the first year students of Computer Science and Information Technology Departments.
  • The introduction was given by N. Anushka Caringula, Chairperson, Computer Society.
  • Mr. Prasanth Mohan initiated his talk by introducing himself and how he was able to come and deliver a talk on IEEE Computer Society.
  • He started with the very introduction to IEEE, how its management is structured, its hierarchy, its divisions, etc.
  • He also briefed on Societies & Communities, Publications & Standards.
  • He had also given information about Membership & Services, Conferences & Events at Section, Regional and MGA level.
  • He talked about Education & Careers and introduced few tools such as ResumeLab, myIEEE, ieee.tv, IEEE Collabratec, IEEE Xplore, etc.
  • He had also covered things related to Volunteering at Section, Region and MGA level and put forth the pros and cons of it.
  • He had concentrated on introducing the audience to various dimensions along IEEE Computer Society.
  • He painted a complete picture of IEEE Computer Society with the strokes of Membership Benefits, Conferences held, Congress held, Competitions, Scholarships, Awards, Sister Organizations, and Structure of Organization.
  • He added that the 2022 report in Computer Society contains about Quantum Computing, Software defined Network etc. and made them aware about the Volunteering Leadership Training (VOLT).
  • He ended the session sharing a little of his journey with IEEE and how it influenced his life in a positive outlook.
  • Quitting beat around the bush, Prasanth has also answered queries posted by the audience in regard to Computer Society.
  • After the session, Mr. Prasanth Mohan was greeted by our Branch Counselor Mr. M. Venkateswara Rao with a memento.

Speaker Profile: Prasanth Mohan is a Computer Science & Engineering Graduate from Anna University, Chennai. He currently works with REDD Robotics as Associate Engineer where he handles the 3Ding (www.3Ding.in) division which is involved in manufacturing affordable FDM 3D Printers and offering 3D Printing Services across India. His areas of Interest include Robotics, Embedded system & 3D Printing. Prior to his work with REDD Robotics, he worked as an Instructor for Pre-University Students training them on Robotics and Embedded System. Over the last five years, he served on various volunteering levels within IEEE Computer Society which includes Student Chapter Chair, Adviser & Mentor. He is a part of MGA Board for the last three years. He served as Global Student Representative for the year 2014. He currently serves as Vice Chair for Student and Young Professionals Activities focusing on Region 8 to 10. Prasanth also volunteers for IEEE Women in Engineering (International Leadership Conference), IEEE Education Activities Board (Education Portals) & MGA Student Activities (IEEEXtreme). He is a recipient of Richard E Merwin Scholarship (2013) & Larry K Wilson Student Volunteer Award - Special Mention (2014).

Review: A productive and a timely session which encouraged students and had a profound insight towards the depths of IEEE and Computer Society, in particular, as a takeaway.
