The first Section meeting of 2018 will be a tour of Area 515 Des Moines Maker Space.  The Des Moines Makerspace is a non-profit community of makers, artists, and hobbyists.  Their shared workspace offers the tools, technology, and resources needed to make projects and hobbies a reality.  The space is equipped with electronic test equipment, 3D printers, CNC routers, and laser cutter.  This is a collaborative space where assistance and advice is close at hand.  See https://area515.org.

Maker space activities can help young people develop the critical skills needed for entering the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).  The activities provide hands-on learning, help with critical thinking skills, and boost self-confidence.

Des Moines Maker Space is located at the corner of 18th and Grand, diagonally across the street from Central Campus (the old Des Moines Tech building).  Street parking is free after 6:00 PM.

After the tour, we will have dinner at A Dong restaurant, 1511 High Street.  A Dong features Vietnamese cuisine.  Everyone will order from the menu.  See www.adongrestaurant.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/adongmenu.pdf.
