Workshop on “Smart Grid Technologies”
Organized for Utility Engineers, Faculty Members, and Research Assistants and Scholars
The Workshop was organized on December 13, 2017, in the Department of Electrical Engineering, AMU.
About 60 participants (utility engineers, faculty members, research assistants, and scholars) attended the
program. The lectures primarily dealt with the basic concepts and applications of Smart Grid,
Technologies involved in the smart grid like Renewable Sources Integration, Real Time Monitoring,
Smart Meters, PMUs and Synchrophasors measurement, Demand Response etc. The National Smart
Grid Mission of the Indian Government and the role of Indian Smart Grid Forum were also explained.
An important part of the lectures was on the importance of the integration of renewable energy
sources-, especially solar PV- with the Grid. The audience was also informed about the National Solar
Mission of the Government of India and its importance for Environment protection. Under this mission
, the Indian Government has set a target of installation of 100 GW of Grid Connected Solar PV out of
which 40GW has to come from small installation like residential customers with net metering.
A case study on the 4.5MW Grid Integrated Solar PV installed in the AMU campus was also shared. The
lectures were successful in achieving the desired results as the participants found the concepts very
interesting and motivating. The talks led to many questions and engrossed discussion with the
participants.
The inaugural function was attended by the Pro Vice-Chancellor of AMU Prof. Tabassum Shahab and Mr.
S. B. Pal, Superintending Engineer of the local utility. The lectures were delivered by Dr. Mohd Rihan,
Associate Professor, and Prof. Abu Tariq, Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, AMU. The
vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Mohd Toaha Umar, Chairperson, IEEESB ZHCET, AMU, Aligarh.
