Topic:

Electromagnetic inversion for characterization and design

Electromagnetic (EM) inversion is defined as the process by which some properties of an investigation domain are found from their associated external EM signature. The investigation domain may include objects (or, regions) that scatter EM waves (e.g., biological tissues or sea ice), or sources that generate EM waves (e.g., radiating antennas). These two cases are then referred to as EM inverse scattering and inverse source problems respectively. In this talk, we focus on some benefits and challenges associated with EM inversion for the following three application areas: near-field microwave imaging, microwave sea ice remote sensing, and antenna characterization. We also discuss some preliminary results on how to use EM inversion for design of radiating elements.

Biography:

Puyan Mojabi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Manitoba. Since 2014, Dr. Mojabi has been serving as an Early Career Representative of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI). He also served as a National Representative of the Canadian National Committee of URSI, and the Chair of the IEEE Winnipeg Section. Dr. Mojabi is a recipient of the University of Manitoba’s Falconer Emerging Researcher Rh Award for Outstanding Contributions to Scholarship and Research in the Applied Sciences category. He also received three Young Scientist Awards from URSI, and an Excellence in Teaching Award from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Manitoba.
