LTE RAN technology presentation and demonstration on Nokia equipment

Between November 20 and November 22 representatives of Nokia Mobile Networks Romania paid a visit at the Communications Department of the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (TUCN). The scope of the visit was twofold:
- installation at the TUCN of a laboratory platform implementing an experimental LTE network (hardware eNBs, virtualized core, mobile test terminals, USIMs, O&M software)
-presentation of the Nokia LTE technology with live demos on the platform for the teaching staff and students of the Communications department.

The Nokia LTE solutions were described in two presentations offered on November 22.

- the first one entitled “LTE platform demo and usage”, was delivered by eng. Radu Modoaca and Florin Costin Ciocan (Nokia Mobile Networks Romania) between 9-12 a.m. It dealt with issues regarding the physical and the NAS layers of LTE and LTE-A and their practical implementation on hardware equipment. O&M issues and the configuration of the platform were also discussed. It was addressed to the teaching staff and doctoral students.

- the second one entitled “LTE RAN Technology”, delivered by eng. Florin Costin Ciocan and Mihai Brateanu (Nokia Mobile Networks Romania), between 17:30-19:30, dealt with the PHY layer and was addressed mainly to the Master students in Communications. It pointed out the basic functional blocks and their intercorrelation.

Both presentations were combined with live demos on the Nokia LTE platform. The presentations were followed by sessions of questions and answers, and raised great interest from the audience.

The event was organized at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca by prof. Romulus Terebes from the Communications Department.
