The PES and IAS Chapters will sponsor a technical seminar on the topic of Integrated Volt/VAR Control (IVVC) as it relates to Smart Grid. The session will be held on Friday, March 22, 2013 at PSE&G’s Edison Training & Development Center, 234 Pierson Avenue, Edison, NJ 08837.

Topic:
The seminar will cover the basics of integrated Volt/VAR control systems which have become a primary focus in any Smart Grid deployment. Integrated Volt/VAR is coordinating the switched capacitor banks on the distribution system with upstream LTCs and single phase regulators in order to reduce system losses, create system capacity, have the ability to shed load and reduce operations on high cost field equipment, mainly LTCs. The presentation will also address possible effects of distributed generation on the distribution system and how it impacts the IVVC system.

• Why do you utilities want to implement IVVC
• How does existing equipment influence the implementation
• How to implement IVVC without communications to devices outside of the substation
• How to implement IVVC with communications to devices outside the substation
• Why the need for a SCADA Heartbeat
