[Legacy Report] Critical issues in the development of phased array antenna based systems
Overview
Phased arrays have been traditionally the specialty for Radar and EW systems. But with the advent of 5G and IOT they are becoming more common and in a few years they will become a commodity. Phased array techniques have evolved over long period of time and newer techniques are being invented to drive the cost of design as well cost of operation. This presentation will introduce various aspects of Phased array design and the challenges. While in the past they used to be designed only by RF beamforming techniques, the digital beam forming techniques brought a lot of enhancement. Adaptive beamforming would not have been possible without the baseband algorithms. The modern phased array design needs harnessing various domains of Based band, RF, antenna and thermal. The presentation will show how these are brought together to facilitate an efficient design.
Dr. Murthy Upmaka has been with hp, Agilent Technologies and Keysight technologies for the past 18 years working both in R&D and field as a system architect and a senior application engineer. He received his Ph.D from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India and conducted post-doctoral research at Trinity College Dublin on Far Infrared Studies as a visiting Leverhulme Trust fellow. He published several papers in reputed journals including IEEE transactions. He holds two patents on base station amplifier test system. He was selected for the Agilent Technologies President Club in 2011 which is given to the top 1% of the best performing employees. He has extensive experience in modeling and simulating communication systems as well as Radar and EW systems. His current interests are in System level modeling and simulation and increasing the fidelity of the models through electromagnetic and circuit simulations.
