[Legacy Report] Amateur radio: on the cutting edge of technology and public service
Overview
Inspired by Marconi’s wireless telegraphy transmissions in the late 1800s, amateur radio operators began experimenting with radio technology and since that time, they have continually contributed to the art and science of radio communication. We will explore current advances by amateurs in software-defined radio (SDR), satellite communication, microwave technology, and propagation, and how these have been used to provide emergency communications and other public service capabilities. We will also learn how amateur radio has led to rewarding careers in electrical engineering, as well as benefitting those already engaged in the profession.
