[Legacy Report] Advanced Biometric Technologies for Humanitarian Services
Biometric technologies allow for efficiently analyzing human traits (e.g., face, fingerprint, iris, palm) for identifying or recognizing a person. Advanced biometrics is able to simplify the identity management and make it more usable by using the opportunities offered by less-constrained biometrics, including contactless techniques. These advanced solutions become critical and highly valuable whenever the collection of biometric traits is not performed in a rather ideal environment (e.g., difficult light conditions, distant subjects, mobile subjects, illnesses, partially occluded views).
This talk will analyze the opportunities offered by emerging biometric technologies and their use for identity verification and recognition. These solutions constitute enabling technologies for many applications in difficult environments. In particular, they will be extremely precious in humanitarian services (e.g., health care in rural areas; distribution of food, other goods, and subsidies in areas where economy is very poor or hit by natural disasters; protection and support to immigrants and refugees).
