Power consumption became a limitation for large scale computer systems, especially in high-performance computing and cloud computing contexts. In this lecture, I explain how power became an issue, server power breakdown by components, data center power consumption, and the practices to build energy-efficient servers and data centers. Finally, I use a case study of the energy consumption of virtual machine I/O to demonstrate how system-level research can be conducted.
