Dave Gorby  has a B.A.Sc. and a M.A.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of BC. He previously worked as a research engineer, project engineer, and facility manger in the private sector. He joined BC Hydro in October 2007 and worked as an engineer and a project manager in the Remote Community Electrification (RCE) Program. David joined Generation Engineering as a Project Engineer in February 2013 and has worked primarily on generator replacement projects.

5:00 - 5:30 pm: “Current standard activities of the materials sub-committee of IEEE PES Electric Machinery Committee” by Yangxin Li

<image003.jpg>Yangxin Li is a specialist engineer in the Mechanical Design Division of Generation Engineering. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Zhejiang University and Master of Applied Science degrees from Zhejiang University and Dalhousie University. Yangxin joined BC Hydro in 2012. He is the project engineer for Bridge River U1-4 generators / governors upgrade and generator work package manager for Ruskin powerhouse upgrade. Before joining BC Hydro, Yangxin worked for large hydro equipment suppliers GE Hydro and Andritz Hydro, and conducted research and development in universities. Yangxin enjoys leading complex projects and solving complex problems. Examples of his achievements before joining BC Hydro includes leading the generator design of Mica 5&6 as the system engineer, as well as completing the root cause analysis of a generator failure at MES hydropower plant (4 x 263 MVA) with a very challenging schedule of three months.

Yangxin will make a presentation regarding the materials sub-committee of IEEE PES Electric Machinery Committee. The materials sub-committee deals with requirements related to research, development, design, manufacturing, testing, and maintenance of electric machinery, with a focus on material related subjects. This sub-committee reviews and revises test codes as required, and provides recommendations for all revisions to standards, recommended practices, and guides within its scope. Standards and guides it is working on cover subjects such as voltage endurance and thermal cycling tests of windings, evaluation of stator cores of electric machinery, partial discharge tests for generators etc. Yangxin participated in the fall 2016 meeting of this sub-committee. He will make an introduction on this sub-committee and the standards it is working on, with focus on the ones more relevant to BC Hydro.

5:30 - 6:00 pm: “Highlights of the 2016 CEATI Grounding and Lightning Conference” presented by Mazana Armstrong

<image005.jpg>Mazana Armstrong is a Specialist Engineer and Engineering Team Lead with BC Hydro Transmission Engineering.  Her responsibilities include electrical aspects of the transmission line design, operation and maintenance. She holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Zagreb, Croatia, and M.A.Sc., plus a Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia, Canada.  Mazana is a registered professional engineer in the Province of British Columbia and a Senior Member of IEEE. She is also a paper reviewer for IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery and BC Hydro representative for CEATI Grounding and Lightning Task Force. She is a member of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and the IEEE Standards

The CEATI Grounding & Lightning Conference is an annual forum for information exchange, with a focus on technical presentations, training and the sharing of ideas and experiences to benefit the industry. Grounding and lightning issues continue to be an important area of development for the industry, as better ways to design, construct and test grounding and lightning systems meet higher standards and changing industry demands. Close to 100 grounding & lightning professionals convened in Arlington, Virginia for the 2016 CEATI Grounding and Lightning conference. Among the numerous presentations given by industry experts and utility representatives, the attendees focused on topics related to Grounding, Lightning and Safety. Presentations were divided into the sessions on electrical coordination between Lightning Protection & Performance, T&D lines and pipelines, Substation Grounding, T&D System Grounding, Personnel Protective Grounding, Copper Theft. Following the conference, the Grounding & Lightning Interest Group members participated in a closed-door, utility-only meeting, where they discussed issues pertinent to their organizations.

Mazana will provide a summary of the topics presented at the conference and highlight and discuss issues that are currently of high interest to BC Hydro as well as the rest of the power industry.
