Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering of N.M.A.M. Institute of Technology, Nitte organized a five dayFaculty Development Program  on “Machine Learning & its Applications in Engineering & Technology” between 2nd and 6th of January 2018. The FDP was funded by ISRO, Bengaluru, Syndicate Bank and technically co-sponsored by IEEE Mangalore Subsection. 35 Faculty and Research scholars from various parts of the state and 25 participants from NMAMIT participated in the five day FDP.

The FDP aimed at bringing awareness amongst the teaching faculty about ‘Machine Learning & its Applications’.The inaugural function of the workshop was held on 2nd January 2018. Dr. U. C. Niranjan, Director, Research & Training, Manipal Dot Net Pvt. Ltd., Manipal was the chief guest of the function.Dr. U. C. Niranjan highlighted the need for Deep Learning in engineering industry.The Principal of the institute, Dr. Niranjan N. Chiplunkar, in his presidential remarks told that the concept of Machine Learning is not new but the awareness about the same has started.

 Dr. RekhaBhandarkar, HoD& Convener of the workshop welcomed the gathering and spoke about the relevance of Machine Learning in the current scenario. Sri. Subramanya Bhat, Assoc. Prof. &Organising Secretary of the workshop introduced the chief guest to the audience.  Sri. Pradyumna G.R., Asst. Prof., &Joint Organising Secretary rendered vote of thanks. Smt. Shankari, Asst. Prof., and Smt. Ashwini,Asst. Prof., presented the invocation. Mrs.Vaishali Suvarna,Asst. Prof., compered the programme.

In his key note address Dr U. C. Niranjan highlighted the projects implemented by Manipal Dot NetPvt. Ltd., in the area of Machine Learning. He also discussed briefly about Video Analytics and Face Detection using Viola-Jones Algorithm, Face Recognition:PCA, Discriminant, and DeepNeural Network. On the same daythe afternoon session and next day morning sessions were handled byDr. Arulalan, Asst.Prof. NITK, Surathkalwhere he explained the basics of Eigen Vector, Eigen values which is the basic building block of Machine Learning. This was followed by a sessionon the basics of Pattern recognition byDr. RaghavendraAsst.Prof., NITK, Surathkal.

On the third day Dr Ashok Rao, Former Network Head,CBDT,IISc, Bengaluru handled the sessions on Introduction to Machine Learning, followed by Linear Algebra and Machine Learning in Image Processing.DrRoshan,Prof.,VCET, Puttur handled a session on ECG classification using Machine Learning followed by a hands on session the next day.

Fourth day Dr. DeepuVijayasenan,Asst.Prof., NITK, Surathkal handled sessions on CNN, Deep Learning followed by hands on session using Python and Keras. He also explained the applications of Neural Network and its endless possibilities.

On the last day Dr. Imran ,Senior Data Scientist,Ejyle Technologies, Bengaluru handled sessions on Clustering, Classification and application of Machine Learning in Health care Application which was followed by hands on session using R Programming.

An informal valedictory function was conducted on the last day. External participants expressed their happiness over the selection of resource persons, topic selection and about the facilities and time management. Certificates were distributed to external and internal participants. Mr. Subramanya Bhat, Organizing Secretary briefed about the FDP and Dr. RekhaBhandarkar, Convener of the workshop rendered vote of thanks. The valedictory function was compered by Mrs. Vaishali Suvarna.

Biography:

Dr. Niranjan U. C. is Director of Research and Training at MDN. He brings more than 18 years of experience and passion in signal-processing. Well known as a teacher and senior researcher, his students have spread far and wide. He was a visiting researcher at Parama Tech Biomonitoring Institute, Fukuoka, Japan in 1994 and 1996. He has been teaching at various levels at the Manipal Institute of Technology since 1986, and is currently a registered PhD advisor at the Manipal University. He was guest faculty at Mangalore University, NMAMIT Nitte, and Karmic Manipal.

Dr. Niranjan is a Senior Member of the IEEE and the past national secretary of the Biomedical Engineering Society of India. He has served on the technical program committees of a number of conferences and workshops including IEEE-EMBS Annual Conference, 1998, Hongkong, National Conference on Biomedical Engineering, 2001, Bangalore and National Conference on Knowledge Based Frontier Technologies, 2007, Manipal. He has published over 40 Journal and conference papers. He was winner of the Whitaker Foundation student paper competition in IEEE-EMBS Conference, Paris 1992 and the Young Investigator Award, ICSE Conference, Arizona 1996.

Dr. Niranjan holds a PhD in Electrical Science from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore; M. Tech from KREC Surathkal and Bachelors in Electronics and Communication from the Gogte Institute of Technology Belgaum. A multifaceted personality, he also speaks German and Japanese, translates Vachanas of Basavanna, manages the Veera Shaiva Jangama Mutt and the Chitrakala Mandira Art School in Udupi.
