Joint Alabama Section & UA Student Branch Meeting


For its April meeting, the Alabama Section has partnered with the IEEE Student Branch at UA to bring you a unique event.  Join us to:

- Learn more about the UA IEEE Student Branch
- See *LIVE* exciting student hardware demonstrations
- Get a preview of IEEE SoutheastCon 2018, the annual IEEE Region 3 conference with plenty of student and professional development activities
- Learn about Hydrogen Maser Atomic Clocks with a presentation by
H.B. Owings of Microsemi located in Tuscaloosa.

As usual, we will hold this meeting on the first Monday of the month, but with a new location and time this time.  It will be in Tuscaloosa, on the campus of the University of Alabama (SERC Building, Room 1013), and will start on April 2 at 6:00 PM.

There will be pizzas and refreshments provided, sponsored by the IEEE Alabama Section.

Microsemi Hydrogen Maser Atomic Clock

The Microsemi Hydrogen Maser Atomic Clock is the only commercially available Hydrogen Maser produced in the United States. It finds use in time keeping for our nation and others, radio astronomy, GPS ground station monitoring and primary research efforts toward other more advanced atomic clocks.  Mr. Owings will give an overview of the clock operation (how it works) and discuss its use in more detail.

 

Biography:

Mr. H.B. Owings of Tuscaloosa, AL, is currently Senior Hardware Development Engineer at Microsemi’s Tuscaloosa facility that manufactures the company’s Hydrogen Maser and associated products.  Mr. Owings holds a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Alabama and is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Alabama.  Mr. Owings is also a senior Member of the IEEE.  He has over 30 years’ experience in the design, development, manufacture and field maintenance of Hydrogen Masers.  His primary area of focus is the development high performance frequency standards and associated products for field use.

UA Student Activities & Hardware Demo

The IEEE Student Branch at UA, including current and incoming officers, will present the activities they organize regularly for students and faculty, including presentations from external speakers, social events, fundraisers, etc...

There will also be an exciting live hardware demonstration, with an opportunity to observe robots in action and interact with students developing them.
