Topic:

A Geographically-spaced Synchronized Signal Detection System

A system has been designed and implemented that makes simultaneous geographically spaced time-and-frequency-synchronized measurements of hypothetical extraterrestrial narrowband signals in the 1405-1448 MHz band. One radio telescope is the Sixty Foot Deep Space Exploration Society Plishner Telescope in Haswell, Colorado, and the second radio telescope is the Forty Foot Telescope in Green Bank, West Virginia. A GPS-signallocked reference oscillator and a digital back-end is used at each site to permit differential Doppler measurements to a precision of +-1.8 Hz. This presentation will describe the system, observations of simultaneous close-frequency pulses, and future plans to enhance capabilities of the system.

Biography:

Skip currently contributes to telescope development, science and education as a part-time volunteer engineer at the Green Bank Observatory. Skip develops systems, hardware and software for astronomical observations and the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, for the Green Bank Telescope, the world’s largest fully steerable telescope, the Forty Foot Telescope at Green Bank, and the Paul Plishner Deep Space Exploration Society Sixty Foot Telescope near Haswell, Colorado.
Previous work experience includes approximately ten years as Chief Technology Officer at Cellular Specialties, Inc. five years as co-founder, CTO and Chief Scientist at Vivato, and instrument R&D engineering and management positions during a twenty-seven year career at Hewlett-Packard Co.
Skip has a BSEE from Case Western Reserve University and was raised by American parents in the Philippines. Skip is also a member of IEEE.
