INDUSTRIAL VISIT REPORT
IEEE PES and IAS joint student branch chapter of Amrita School of Engineering organized an industrial visit to Mettur Thermal Power Station (MTPS) located in the Salem district near the bank of the Cauvery River in Tamil Nadu on 23rd March 2018. Mettur plant was opened in 1957 and is operated by Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and is also ISO 9001:2008 certified. It consists of two units, with one unit generating 600 MW of power and other unit generating 840 MW of power. The 840 MW unit was used for commercial power generation, whereas the 600 MW was mainly used for maintenance purpose and for backup. The visit was made to 840 MW plant which is further sub categorised into four other subunits, each capable of generating 210 MW.
Thirty Five students of sixth semester Electrical and Electronics Engineering branch who were accompanied by two faculty members Dr. J. Ramprabhakar and Ms. Mamatha I. took part in the visit. Students were first allowed to see the central control room, where a clear explanation about the working of plant was given by the employees. Then under the guidance of the employees, students were taken to different sections of the plant to observe diverse operations in a power plant. The students were explained how the coal is powdered before feeding it to the boilers. Different processes like water treatment for generation, combustion process that includes the operation of diesel gun, oil gun and powdered coal, the steam turbine operation etc., were thoroughly explained. The state of the art construction and technologies awed the visiting delegation. The students had a great experience in visiting the plant and got an insight of the actual working of the thermal power plant.
