Boston-based startup Starry has been operating a commercial millimeter wave-based broadband access network in the Boston metro area using a set of advanced technologies equivalent or similar to certain aspects of the proposed 3GPP 5G standards since early 2017. Starry operates a wide area broadband service using 37.0 ~ 38.6 GHz as granted under a market test authority license by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), to test the commercial capability of millimeter wave frequencies. To prove out the technology’s capability, Starry has extended base technologies of the IEEE’s 802.11ac and 802.11ax such as MU-MIMO and Hybrid Digital Beamforming available in 802.11ac and 802.11ax and built sophisticated front ends using active phased array antenna systems to provide resilient broadband service wirelessly to the home, at gigabit-capable speeds.  Starry also uses other leading edge technologies including the ITU-T’s G.hn.  Starry will share its technical and operational experience in building and operating this technology.
