  Speakers

Prof. Ramakrishna Gokaraju Prof. Ramakrishna Gokaraju of Dept. of  Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada.

Topic:

“Advancements in Power Systems Relaying for HV/EHV Transmission Lines & Simulation of Renewable Energy Systems”

Abstract of the lecture:

The talk/lecture will discuss the research work carried out by Dr. Ramakrishna Gokaraju on High Speed Digital Relaying, Out-of-Step Protection of Generators and Transmission Lines, Modeling of Wind Generators for Power System Protection Studies, Fault Location in DC Grids (PV Systems), etc, in the Real-Time Power Systems Simulation Laboratory at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada.

High speed relaying using traveling waves has gained significant attention of late in the industry. A high speed distance relay using FPGAs and IEC 61850 protocols (SV & GOOSE) for HV/EHV transmission lines will be discussed. It can make a secure trip decision in 0.6~0.8 cycles. The presentation would also discuss industry based methods and new methods for out-of-step protection of generators and transmission lines, generic models for modeling wind generators, fault location in DC systems (PV farms) using the analysis of the converter switching frequencies.

Biography:

Dr.Ramakrishna Gokaraju, is Presently working as Professor, Department of  Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada.

Also, he is a member of the J-5 Working Group (“Application of Out-of-Step Protection Schemes for Generators”) of the IEEE Power System Relaying Committee (PSRC), IEEE WG 1110 (“Guide for Synchronous Generator Modeling Practices & Applications in Power System Stability Analyses”).

Ramakrishna Gokaraju is a BTech (EEE)/ 1992 graduate from the REC (NIT), Trichy.        He obtained M.Sc.
