BMSCE IEEE organized an eight day workshop on Android App Development, from the 26th of December, 2017 to the 4th of January, from 10 AM to 1 PM and 2PM to 5PM, in the BS Narayan hall. The workshop was not held on the 31st of December and 1st of January owing to special holidays. Each session had a Google certified instructor, Vinay Noah to instruct and teach the students about app development. Rohit Shrothrium and Nitesh Srivats were in-charge of organizing the workshop.

The workshop was publicized through posters around the college campus and social media messages. The workshop was not exclusively for students of BMS College of Engineering and also received participation from other colleges. The fees for the workshop was Rs.6000 for non-IEEE members and Rs.5000 for IEEE members. Registrations and fee transactions were made online as well as in person.

The total count of students who registered was 58, 45 IEEE members and 13 non-IEEE members.

The workshop started with the instructor help the participants understand the basic OOPs concepts: Abstraction, Encapsulation, Polymorphism, Inheritance, Association, Aggregation and Composition. Then, they were taught to install Android Studio 3 and taught the Android Basics. They were first given a task to make a simple calculator. During the course they went on to learn how to make the apps more interactive using buttons and changing texts. Slowly, the participants learned to harness the real power of the Object Oriented Programming by building one’s own custom to store real life data, use loops to show the data to the user and make the apps more impressive by adding images and audios wherever required.

After this, they learnt to increase the networking their apps like connecting to network, choosing HTTP client, performing network operations outside User Interface thread and how to respond to changes. Then, the most important of data storage was taught to them which enabled the students to store data and files as need be.

At last, they were given a few more models to work upon and design apps and were taught how to integrate all the several models and make an interactive finished app.

Towards the end of the workshop, the students were instructed to design an Instagram close app for their project based on which they were given internship offers by Google. But irrespective of whether their project got selected for internship offer or not every participant received a Course Completion Certificate.

Overall, the aim of the program was fulfilled. Students went in the room as “Consumers of Technology” and came out  as “Creators of Technology.”
