BUENAVENTURA ED/CAS CHAPTER

Since its inception, MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS) has been seen as a highly promising technology with the potential to revolutionize a broad range of applications and products. By virtue of its leverage of the rapidly expanding semiconductor technology base, it offered the ability to integrate novel sensing and actuation functions with electronic circuits. Early demonstration of high-impact products (such as inertial sensors and optical display engines) clearly established the value of MEMS, and advancement of the following years in reliability, packaging and fabrication technologies have dramatically expanded the range of products currently in production. Coupled with macro-trends in smart systems and connectivity, advancement in both MEMS technology and product applications are still growing.

An introduction to MEMS technology will be presented, addressing an overview of device and fabrication technologies; applications and markets; key issues; and future trends.
