Topic: Predicting readmission among patients with heart failure

Healthcare institutions across the country are striving to reduce readmissions to improve quality of care and reduce financial penalties for excess readmission. Current models perform poorly (with some of the best models having AUC less than 0.76).

We will discuss lessons learned and results of readmission models based on data from over 300 hospitals across the U.S. This involves analysis of more than 25 million patient record from each hospital’s EMR and data mining of all sensible discrete data available. Given the large data size, our analysis was conducted using Apache Spark on Amazon’s Web Services cloud computing platform. We believe that our study is one of the largest study on readmission conducted to date. We will also discuss the problem of predicting readmission among heart failure patients for which performance, as recorded in published literature, is abysmally low.

 

Speaker Bio:

Afnan Algahtani is a professional data scientist with master’s degree in computational and data science from Chapman University. Her undergraduate degree is in information science and technology. She has experience in building machine learning, and deep learning models as well as analyzing big data for driving business solutions.

Ms. Algahtani is currently working independently with a CHOC Children's Hospital Data Scientist Dr. Louis Ehwerhemuepha on projects involving identification of novel risk factors and prediction of serious safety events and hospital-acquired conditions in the ICU.
