IEEE SCIENCE WEEK COET 2018


In order to commemorate the discovery of the Raman Effect in India by the Indian physicist C.V. Raman in the year 1930. To honor this event, 28th of February is observed as a national science day. A particular theme is selected for every year's National Science day celebration. The theme of this year was ‘Technology for Sustainable Future’.

National Science Day was celebrated at College of Engineering Thalassery on 3rd of March 2018 under the guidance of our IEEE SB chapter. The session was inaugurated by our former IEEE SB Chair; Abhishek Nambiar. Our IEEE SB Treasurer Shibin and Secretary Ashin V briefed the gathering about the objectives of celebrating national science day.

As part of the IEEE Science week, the following programs were conducted.

  • Introduction to Science week

  • Talk about sustainable technology

  • Poster designing

  • Sci-Fi film fest

  • Photography contest

Certain contests were also conducted as part of the program to make participants actively take part in it.

INTRODUCTION TO SCIENCE WEEK

Prior to the activities, participants were grouped into a team of seven. They were given a task to give a small talk about Science day. Each group completed the task with full enthusiasm.

After that Secretary, Ashin presented a presentation about the national science day and the importance of conducting IEEE Science week. As a follow-up program, each group was given some interesting questions to submit a paper on.

Talk about sustainable technology

The next task assigned to the groups was to present an idea about sustainable technologies and to express their own views on using safer and cleaner technologies to make the world a better place. Groups were given amble time to research about their topic.

Then a representative from each group was called upon to speak few words about that technology and what they find in that technology that meets the sustainable standards.

Poster Designing

A contest was held on poster designing, in which all groups were asked to choose a topic on developing technology according to their interests. Participants were given necessary materials and mentoring to compete in the contest.

Sci-Fi film fest

In the afternoon section, the film Transcendence was showcased. This movie depicts the story of a man's consciousness getting trapped inside the internet as an AI. Soon the AI turns bad and starts building its own kingdom and hybrid humans. The clash between the human beings and AI is explained with complete detail. This movie also warns the present society about the harm AI can cause if it is not controlled. The response from the participants about the movie was better than thought. They really enjoyed the flick.

Photography Challenge

As last challenge participants were asked to take some pictures of something science related around the college. Participants submitted some competition worthy pictures.
