Matt B. Lara of Applied Physical Electronics L.C.

Topic:

Practical High-Power EM Testing: Methods, Standards, and Equipment

The electromagnetic environment associated with potential threats to civilian and military assets can range anywhere from a high-powered microwave (HPM) device that produces extremely high peak-powers (MW to GW) in narrow-band frequency ranges > 1GHz, to an electromagnetic pulse generated by a high-altitude nuclear event (HEMP) covering a spectrum from almost DC to the hundreds of megahertz. This talk discusses the equipment, diagnostics, test-methodologies and standards associated with this discipline from the practical perspective of a test engineer (who has broken a lot of stuff - some on purpose).

Biography:

Matt Lara received his Masters from Texas Tech University in 2003 and studied the Virtual Cathode Oscillator, or “Vircator” and other associated High-Power Microwave devices for his thesis. During this time in the Pulsed Power Lab, Matt met the owner of Applied Physical Electronics L.C. (APELC), Dr. Jon Mayes, who provided a compact Marx generator to replace the room-sized one Mr. Lara had built for his studies. As a result of this encounter, Mr. Lara has now worked at APELC for 14 years and is the Senior Test Engineer and head of Business Development, as well as a member of the IEEE EMC Society. During his tenure with APELC, Matt has designed and tested many different types of high-power EM systems, including: HPM, wide-band, ultra wide-band, and High-Altitude Nuclear EMP (HEMP) simulators.

APELC recently completed final delivery of the 4MV pulse generator for the Vertical EMP Simulator (VEMPS) at Patuxent River Naval Air Station, which is now the largest functioning EMP simulator in the world.

Outside of work, Matt volunteers on the Boards of the Hill Country Alliance and Big Bend Conservation Alliance- regional non-profits focused on the conservation of the land, water, night skies and unique heritage of both the Hill Country and Big Bend Regions. Matt also plays accordion in a Tex-Mex band called La Tampiquena.
