“Meet and Learn” - Technical Society Reporting Out Session - CEATI/IEEE/SDS
The IEEE Vancouver Section Industry Applications Society Chapter and BC Hydro are pleased to co-sponsor this technical society reporting out event. The purpose of this event is to share and transfer knowledge gained from attending technical society meetings, conferences, technical training, etc. with others in the profession. The presentations to be made at this event are from individuals who attended the 2018 CEATI Grounding & Lightning Conference, the 2018 Electrical Insulation Conference (EIC), and the Fall 2018 Station Design Industry Suite Consortium (SDISC) Meeting. All presenters will provide a summary of the topics presented at the events they attended, plus cover any highlights, share any new information learned and discuss issues that are currently of high interest to BC Hydro as well as the rest of the power industry. Each presentation will be 30 minutes long. Please come and meet with colleagues on topics relevant to the power industry. Food and refreshments will be provided. Registration is encouraged and the event is free-of-charge.
Agenda:
4:30 - 5:00 pm: “Highlights of the 2018 CEATI Grounding and Lightning Conference” presented by Jahangir Khan
Jahangir Khan is a Senior Engineer with BC Hydro’s Transmission Lines - Electrical Group. He holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering. He is member of the IEEE Vancouver’s Joint IAS/IES Chapter and a BC Professional Engineer.
The CEATI Grounding & Lightning Conference is an annual forum for information exchange, with a focus on technical presentations, training and the sharing of ideas and experiences to benefit the industry. Grounding and lightning issues continue to be an important area of development for the industry, as better ways to design, construct and test grounding and lightning systems meet higher standards and changing industry demands.
Jahangir will provide a summary of the topics presented at the conference and highlight and discuss issues that are currently of high interest to BC Hydro as well as the rest of the power industry.
5:00 - 5:30 pm: “Highlights of the 2018 Electrical Insulation Conference” presented by Wenli Hong
Wenli Hong is a Specialist Engineer with BC Hydro Generation Engineering. His responsibilities include electrical aspects of the generation major equipment specification, tendering, design, and installation. He has over 25 years of experience (more than 10 years with BC Hydro) in major electrical equipment, which are with respect to design, specifications, FAT testing and commissioning, as well as condition assessment, failure investigation, repairs and root cause analysis. Prior to joining BC Hydro, he worked at both utilities and major suppliers, including ATCO Electric and GE Energy.
He is a registered Professional Engineer in British Columbia, and holds a Master Degree of Application Science in Electrical Engineering from École Polytechnique, University of Montreal. He is a Member of IEEE and the IEEE Standards Association. He is BC Hydro representative for IEEE PSE Materials Subcommittee.
The Electrical Insulation Conference (EIC) is an annual applied conference and exhibition on liquid, solid and gaseous insulation materials. The papers and materials present practical applications of electrical insulating systems and materials and diagnostics, for all types of electrical and electronic equipment. Some topics of interest have included: Rotating machines, Variable speed drives, Transformers, Cables, Outdoor insulation (including live line work), Aerospace, Switchgear (including arresters), and Capacitors.
IEEE PES Materials Subcommittee is an important standards subcommittee where multiple industry stakeholders exchange, revise and develop specific industry standards of rotating machines. The committee members from most Utilities in the North American and major generator, motor and insulation materials suppliers will attend the meeting to present and discuss the standards in processing for either new development or upgrade.
Wenli will provide a brief summary of Electrical Insulation Conference 2018 and the topics presented at the IEEE PSE Materials working group meeting and discuss issues that are currently high interest to BC Hydro as well as the rest of the power industry.
5:30 - 6:00 pm: “Highlights of the Fall 2018 Substation Design Suite Industry Consortium Meeting” presented by Will Fajber
Will Fajber is a Principal Engineer for Stations at BC Hydro with 27 years of experience in the Transmission Stations Design and Field Operations. He is knowledgeable about all aspects of station design. Will has a longstanding interest in digital design tools and efficient use of CAD applications. He is a member of the IEEE and is registered as a Professional Engineer in the province of BC.
This session will report out on the Fall 2018 meeting of the Substation Design Suite Industry Consortium (SDSIC). The Consortium of member utilities provides direction and develops best practices around the application of Autodesk products, particularly Inventor and AutoCad Electrical to Substation Design, which are issues that are currently high interest to BC Hydro as well as the rest of the power industry.
