Report on “Writing a research paper ethically” organized by IEEE MTT-S SBC IIT BHU
IEEE Microwave Theory & Techniques Society (MTT-S) Student Branch Chapter (SBC) IIT BHU Varanasi has organized a technical talk on “Writing a research paper ethically” delivered by Prof. Akhlesh Lakhtakia, Penn State University, USA, at the Committee Room of Electronics Engineering Department IIT BHU at 15:00 Hrs on 19 June 2018 (Tuesday). Dr Somak Bhattacharyya, MTT-S SBC advisor, gave a brief info of Prof. Akhlesh Lakhtakia to the audience and invited him for a talk. Prof. Akhlesh Lakhtakia started with the quote “Science is cooperative enterprises and we (researcher) are working together”. Prof. Akhlesh Lakhtakia suggested that a researcher should keep/maintain the essential attributes to write a good scientific paper and precision, transparency, completeness and novelty are the most important attributes of good scientific paper. Prof. Akhlesh Lakhtakia discussed some case study on the plagiarism issue and suggested that the researcher should be careful of plagiarism during the scientific writings. The talk ended around 16.30 Hours19 June 2018.

Prof. Akhlesh Lakhtakia

Biography:
Akhlesh Lakhtakia received the BTech (1979) and DSc (2006) degrees from the Indian
Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) and the MS (1981) and PhD (1983) degrees from the
University of Utah. In 1983 he joined the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics at Penn
State as a post-doctoral research scholar, where he became a Distinguished Professor in 2003, the Charles
Godfrey Binder Professor in 2006, and an Evan Pugh University Professor in 2018. His current research
interests include electromagnetic scattering, surface multiplasmonics, bioreplication, forensic science,
solar energy, sculptured thin films, metasurfaces and mimumes. He was elected a fellow of Optical
Society of America (1992), SPIE (1996), Institute of Physics (UK) (1996), American Association for the
Advancement of Science (2010), American Physical Society (2012), Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers (2016), Royal Society of Chemistry (2016), and Royal Society of Arts (2017). He
has been designated a Distinguished Alumnus of both of his almae matres at the highest level. Awards at
Penn State include: Outstanding Research Award (1996), Outstanding Advising Award (2005), Premier
Research Award (2008), and Outstanding Teaching Award (2016), and the Faculty Scholar Medal (2005).
He received the 2010 Technical Achievement Award from SPIE and the 2016 Walston Chubb Award for
Innovation from Sigma Xi.
