The ASTI Young Innovate Challenge, Miri division was also held during the event.

IEEE Science and Technology Exhibition (IEEE SATE) is a national event, initiated by IEEE Curtin Malaysia Student Branch to promote science, technology, engineering and volunteerism to the community in East Malaysia. This event organization is the first science fair in the historical record to be held in the northern region of Sarawak. The event will be organized in the Pustaka Miri, Miri City on 4 th and 5 th August 2018. The theme is “Innovating the Future through Science and Technology”.

IEEE Science and Technology Exhibition aims to create innovative and interactive science and technology platform in northern regions of Sarawak for students from primary and secondary schools. The objective of the exhibition is to spark students’ curiosity and interest towards the exploration of science and technology via interactive sciences demonstration and engineering technology showcase. It targets to raise the awareness of the youths and public communities about the future trend and the importance of programming in creating future thinkers and makers. In addition, IEEE Science and Technology Exhibition also provides a platform to stimulate the volunteerism among students to reach out the communities by solving real-life problems with technologies through programs such as Chumbaka-Young Innovators Challenge (CYIC), ASTI Young Inventors Challenge (AYIC), Tech Maker and Light Up Miri.

In the exhibition, the venue will be classified into three zones, i.e. (1) STEM Challenge Zone, (2) STEM hide-out zone and (3) Humanitarian interactive zone. Inside the STEM challenge zone, there is the program such as Chumbaka Young Innovators Challenge (CYIC), ASTI Young Inventors Challenge (AYIC) and Drone challenge. Inside the STEM hide-out zone, there are programs such as Tech Maker, STEM playground, IEEE/University/Industrial project showcase, Chumbaka Young Innovators Challenge Open category and Science & Technology museum. Inside the Humanitarian interactive zone, there are corners given to NGO and public for their showcase. The programs involved are art and science gallery, Light Up Borneo/ Light Up Miri, “Think Big” corner and community outreach sharing corner.

Chumbaka Young Innovators Challenge (CYIC) is a competition co-organized with All Aboard Young Leader Center (AAYLC) Chumbaka Miri. This program is aimed to promote digital inventors among secondary school students to showcase their creativity, innovations and problem-solving skills through the digital embedded system. Participants are required to identify real-life problems, design a solution and deliver their idea via prototyping construction with Arduino board. In 2018, 80 secondary school teams are targeted to join in the CYIC program during IEEE Science and Technology Exhibition.

ASTI Young Inventors Challenge (AYIC) is a competition co-organized with Association of Science, Technology & Innovation (ASTI). This program is aimed to instill the interest of secondary school students in learning science and technology for advancing the community and lifestyle. Participants are required to demonstrate a practical solution in science through their creativity, innovations and problem-solving skills. In 2018, 45 secondary school teams are targeted to join in the AYIC during IEEE Science and Technology Exhibition.

CYIC–Open Category is a platform for university students to apply their knowledge of embedded systems and coding through a hands-on learning approach. Participants are required to apply innovative and creative thinking in order to solve industrial problems. At the same time, this program aims to create technology entrepreneurship among university students using their designed products in leveraging communities in term of social and economic aspects. 10 teams of university students are targeted to join in this program during the IEEE Science and Technology Exhibition.
Tech Maker is a platform for students to learn technical skills with the purpose of serving communities with passion. This program is also mainly to ignite the spark of new generations’ interest in IT and programming, which is in line with the Sarawak vision – the development of Digital Economy. This program involves 7 technical modules, consisting of embedded system, Mbot, 3D printing, Mobile App, Tech Art,
Scratch and Solar Power.

Light Up Miri (LUM) is a program initiated by IEEE Curtin Malaysia student branch to gather volunteers in solving community issues using technology. This program is aimed to build and deliver solar-powered lamps to the underprivileged communities which are having the issue of electricity shortage in Sarawak. Volunteers and communities are trained with advanced technical knowledge about renewable energy. In
addition, LUM also raises the awareness and importance of education towards humanity advancement.

Local Industries plays an important role in developing and providing a platform for local talents to enhance themselves technically. IEEE Science and Technology Exhibition also aims to create an opportunity for students and public communities to have a view of the latest or upcoming technologies. At the same time, the event is aimed to increase the interest of youths towards the future and technologies nowadays.
IEEE Science and Technology Exhibition is targeting for more than 1000 participants including the public and students to participate in this exhibition and has themselves gained some knowledge, awareness and small gifts back from the Science and
Technology Exhibition.

The objectives and mission of this event are stated as below:
1. To transform Malaysian youth from digital users to producers in the digital economy
2. To inspire and enlighten the interest of youngsters in digital technologies via
programming and innovative thinking
3. To expose the latest trends of technologies to Malaysian youth
4. To exhibit the innovation of student’s projects in solving real-life problems.
5. To connect with industries and create opportunities for students and the public.

Agenda

1. STEM Challenge Miri Division
a. Chumbaka -- Young Innovators Challenge (CYIC)
CYIC is a competition co-organized with All Aboard Young Leader Center (AAYLC) Chumbaka Miri. This program is aimed to promote digital inventors among secondary school students to showcase their creativity, innovations and problem-solving skills through the digital embedded system. Participants are required to identify real-life problems, design a solution and deliver their idea via prototyping construction with Arduino board. Approximately 80 secondary school teams are targeted to join in the CYIC program during IEEE Science and Technology Exhibition.

b. ASTI – Young Inventors Challenge (AYIC)
AYIC is a competition co-organized with Association of Science, Technology & Innovation (ASTI). This program is aimed to instill the interest of secondary school students in learning science and technology for advancing the community and lifestyle. Participants are required to demonstrate a practical solution in science through their creativity, innovations and problem-solving skills. Approximately 45 secondary school teams are targeted to join in the AYIC during IEEE Science and Technology Exhibition.

c. Drone Challenge
Drone Challenge is open for secondary schools to build their mini-drones and fly through barriers in the short time. The fastest drones whichever complete the tracks win the challenge.

d. IEEE SATE Series 4 Championship
IEEE initiates the competition to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It includes best pitching awards, best team cheering awards, best innovative idea awards, most popular innovators awards. Also, outstanding digital makers awards will be offered to CYIC and outstanding science makers awards will be offered to AYIC participants.

2. STEM HIDE-OUT
a. Tech Maker
Tech Maker is a platform for students to learn technical skills with the purpose of serving the communities with passion.
