-Electromagnetic Modeling and development of novel high power RF Couplers

Low Energy High Intensity Proton Accelerator (LEHIPA) is presently under development at BARC. This 20 MeV ,30 mA proton current accelerator will require 3MW, CW RF Power at 352.2 MHz. This accelerator will need several high power RF components working in vacuum and high EM fields. One of the most crucial component is high power RF coupler which couples power to the accelerating RF cavities. These couplers can be iris type waveguide couplers or coaxial loop couplers. Several designs for both of these coupler types has been studied and analyzed. Presently ridge loaded iris type waveguide couplers are being fabricated for 250 kW, 352.2 MHz CW rating. Parallely, 50 kW, 350 MHz loop type Coaxial couplers are also being developed. The waveguide couplers are generally tuned by post fabrication machining on iris. Recently, author has proposed a novel scheme based upon iris rotation which will avoid any machining operations for tuning. Also, High power RF couplers has been known to suffer from secondary electron resonant emission called multi-pacting. These multipacting currents can lead to excessive localized heating, power reflection and absorption. EM Simulations and measurement setups are required to accurately predict and avoid multipacting. This talk will discuss the present status of the novel RF coupler development and multipacting analysis at LEHIPA, BARC. The possibilities of collaboration with IIT Kanpur will also be explored.
