This presentation will start with a history of the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus specification development over the years. It will cover the key features of a CAN bus that makes it different from most point to point networking architectures. The concept of an N port memory structure and a multimaster protocol will be discussed. The error detection and mitigation methods provided by a CAN help justify the use of this architecture for flight critical Aerospace applications. The key points for upfront system level considerations and analysis of incorporating a CAN bus in a system will be discussed.

Sunil Patel received M Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Powai, India in Controls and Instrumentation and B E from BIrla Institute of Technology and Science in Electronics, Pilani, India. Work experience includes 32 years in Aerospace Electric Power systems, currently working as an Avionics Advisor for Cyient Inc.
