Industrial visit to world’s largest Ultra Mega Solar Power Plant, Kurnool

As a part of IEEE Power and Energy Society Member driven Initiative Programme fund of 1500$ US which was sanctioned in the name of Mr G Vijay Bhaskar of IV EEE (IEEE GPREC SB Chair) for the  year 2018, the GRPEC IEEE PES students chapter organized a visit to “World’s Largest Ultramega 1000 MW solar power plant, Kurnool” near Ghani village, Kurnool district during 5th October 2018 in association with PES/PELS/IAS Joint chapter, IEEE Hyderabad Section.

About the Project: The project was implemented by the Andhra Pradesh Solar Power Corporation Private Limited (APSPCL), a joint venture of the Government of Andhra Pradesh and government of India. Greenko’s 816MWp Ultra Mega Solar Park at Kurnool contributed to this giant leap. Construction of the Plant was started in October 2016 and commissioned on 31st March 2017 – in 166 days, much ahead of the scheduled commissioning date of April 21st, 2017. The Operations & Maintenance of the Ultra Mega solar park is undertaken by Greenko’ s Asset management group. With a staff of about 100 trained AC and DC engineers along with technicians, the Preventive & Breakdown maintenance works are attended to on a daily basis, to maintain high availability of the Plant and the Grid and eliminate under performances, thus leading to high level of Generation and Performance Ratios.

The Kurnool Solar Park is spread over a total area of 5,932.32 acres (24.0072 km2) in the Gani and Sakunala villages of Kurnool district. The region is arid. The park utilizes over 4 million solar panels with capacities of 315 and 320 Watts. The panels are connected to four 220/33 kV pooling stations of 250 MW each and a 400 / 220kV grid substation through nearly 2,000 circuit kilometers of cables. During a sunny day, the Kurnool Solar Park is able to generate more than 8 million kWh of electricity, which is sufficient to meet virtually the entire electricity demand in Kurnool district. A documentary on this project was telecasted in Discovery channel also.

The permission for this visit was obtained from Andhra Pradesh Solar power corporation and Greenko company was assigned this task to explain and demonstrate the Solar plant. Sri Sreenivas Naidu, the head of Greenko Solar Power plant at Kurnool was key person in arranging two engineers i.e Sri Sreenivas Reddy and Sri Mahesh Kumar from Greenko company for explanation of the project as well as demonstration of the site for all the participants. During the visit all the participants (Total participants no is 150) who attended a two day “All Hyderabad Power and Energy Society Students Congress (AHPESSC-2018)” were divided into three batches (50 members in one group)as per suggestion from the Greenko company officials. The company officials explained in brief about how solar power can be extracted from sun and the process. Later on demonstrated the equipment used for solar power production and finally site visit was also explained thoroughly. There's always gonna be growth, improvement, adversity, you just got to take it all in and do what's right, continue to grow, continue to live in the moment. The happiness that was witnessed all around gave us the outmost satisfaction and pleasure.
