collaboration with IEEE-ELECTRON DEVICE SOCIETY DELHI CHAPTER organized a talk on “Recent
Trends in VLSI Technology: A brief Introduction to Layout Designing” on 12th October 2018. Thetalk was conducted in a series of “TECHNEXUS”(an Annual technical fest of InstrumentationDepartment). The talk was delivered by Mr. Neeraj Kapoor, Layout Design Engineer fromSynopsys India Pvt. Ltd. With an introduction to the history of electronics, the remarkable and ever growing field of VLSI was introduced to the audience by the speaker. CMOS technology was first explained, followed by Moore’sLaw to show how the number of transistors per chip is growing exponentially.The technology nodes being used in different electronic gadgets such as laptops, smartphones, etc. were also  told to update the audience with current technology. The fabrication steps involved in making a semiconductor  chip along with the steps involved in its designing were also explained in an easily understandable way. The speaker also introduced various technical terms commonly used in the VLSI industry to the audience. Different VLSI design style like full custom, semi custom and programmable logic were also described. He also explained the different design steps, including logic development, verification and its implementation. The gathering was also briefed with the basics of layout designing and its various verification steps such as LVS, DRC, etc. He also touched upon FinFET technology to introduce students about the state of the art of the current VLSI industry. The students were also exposed to the potential career options in VLSI industry.  Around hundred participants, including students, research scholars and faculty members attended the talk. Overall the session was good and informative.
