Topic:

What does "Advancing Humanity for Humanity" mean for you?

IEEE's tagline is "Advancing Humanity for Humanity"  But what does it mean to a professional society that has greater than 400,000 members spread across the world?  What does it man for Sections, Chapters and individual members?  Doe it convey who we are to non-members and the public?  In my talk, I will give an overview of the state of IEEE activities, (MGA, TAB, HAC) where the challenges are to fulfill our mission.  I will share with you my vision for Region 6.

What is happening in Washington: Conversations between IEEE-USA, Congress, and the White House

ABSTRACT:

IEEE-USA has been engaged on many research policy issues this year and we look forward to working with the new Congress in January.  The National Space Council has an interest in working with our members on issues ranging from robotic exploration to improving engineering systems for space use.  Congressional leaders are also interested in advancing space policy and have sought our input on initiatives and ideas.  In 2018, Congress passed some comprehensive energy bills which IEEE-USA was able to influence through our expertise and technical understanding of energy sources and the electric grid.  In the coming year, Members of Congress will be looking to improve energy and research policy.  This talk will address the progress made by IEEE-USA staff in Washington DC on issues from manufacturing and energy to defense and robotics.  I will address the ways in which IEEE-USA members can get involved in policy-making and how the organization intends to work on initiatives with congressional leaders from the state of Washington.  I will also briefly discuss some of the research related legislation we expect will be introduced and the types of ways we intend to work with Congress on behalf of the technical community.
