Topic:

Evolution of Switching in Telecommunication Systems

Circuit switching in telecommunication evolved through the stages starting from manual to step-by-step Strowger, Crossbar, and finally fully digital switching systems (like No 5ESS)- The switching system in the current digital exchanges involves space and time division switching with multistage time-space switches and time slot interchanger (TSI). It considers the non-blocking criteria but with optimized trunk utilization during the busiest hour. Modern Cellular communication networks require both circuit and packet switching, although IP-based packet switching is the prime mode of switching with applications like VoIP and VoLTE. In the latest broadband technology, fiber-optic switching is very significant with wide applications
