SMC Seminar on Intelligent Task Scheduling in Cloud Data Centers
Intelligent Task Scheduling in Cloud Data Centers
Haitao Yuan, Ph.D. & Assistant Professor
School of Software Engineering
Beijing Jiaotong University, Beijing, China
Time: 2pm, Dec. 4, 2018
Place: ECE 202, NJIT
Cloud computing is growingly used by companies, governments and organizations recently. It is usually implemented in data centers where there are millions of servers and cooling facilities. An increasing number of users send their tasks to large-scale cloud data centers (CDCs) (e.g., Amazon and Google), and this significantly increases the amount of energy consumption. This talk introduces emerging progress made in this field and key challenges on how to realize various cost-effective task scheduling methods for applications in CDCs, including: (1) hybrid task prediction based on wavelet decomposition and autoregressive integrated moving average; (2) spatial task scheduling and resource optimization for cost minimization of the CDC provider; and (3) temporal task scheduling for profit maximization of hybrid clouds.
Bio: Haitao Yuan received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in Software Engineering from Northeastern University, Shenyang, China, in 2010 and 2012, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in Control Science and Engineering from Beihang University, Beijing, China in 2016. He is currently an Assistant Professor with the School of Software Engineering, Beijing Jiaotong University, Beijing, China. He is also a visiting research scholar with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Newark, NJ 07102 USA. His research interests include cloud computing, data centers, green computing, energy efficiency, performance modeling and analysis, and optimization algorithms. Dr. Yuan was the recipient of the 2011 Google Excellence Scholarship.
