IEEE BUET Student Branch organized IEEE Student Professional Awareness Conference (SPAC) -
one of the most prestigious flagship events of IEEE in association with IEEE Bangladesh Section,
IEEE WIE BUET Student Branch Affinity Group, IEEE Industry Application Society BUET Student
Branch Chapter, IEEE Electron Devices Society BUET Student Branch Chapter, IEEE Power and
Energy Society BUET Student Branch Chapter and IEEE Robotics and Automation Society BUET
Student Branch Chapter. The event took place on 13 December, 2018 at Room No. 625, ECE Building,
Department of EEE, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). The event started
at 09:00 AM in the morning.
IEEE Student Professional Awareness Conference (SPAC), provides a platform for students to gain
more insight regarding professional life. Students can thus be more clearly informed regarding their
career opportunities. It provides an excellent networking opportunity for students where they can
communicate with the professionals both from industry and academia to learn about necessary skills
and expertise required to achieve their career goals.
The program was attended by students from Bangladeshi University of Engineering and Technology
(BUET), Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET), American International
University of Bangladesh (AIUB), Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST) and
Premier University, Chittagong; the newest IEEE student Branch of IEEE Bangladesh Section.
The program was hosted by Mohammad Mahinur Rahman, Treasurer IEEE BUET Student Branch and
Saraf Mahnaz, Chairperson at BUET WIE Student Branch Affinity Group.
The registration and kit distribution started at 9.00 AM. At 10:00 AM Saraf Mahnaz welcomed the
attendees and gave everyone a brief outline of the program schedule of the day. At 10.30 AM the first
speaker of the day was Mrs. Nabila Fairuz, Integrated Network Specialist Engineer, Banglalink Digital
Communications Ltd. talked about her journey after graduation and shared her personal experiences
that she obtained throughout her career. From her talk the attending students were able to what they
would have to face after graduation, the skills necessary to excel in the current job sector and how to
excel in the corporate world. The session ended at 11.15 AM.
After the first session, there was a short tea break of 15 minutes. At 11:30 am Dr. Shaikh Anowarul
Fattah, SMIEEE, FIEB; Professor, Department of EEE, Director, Institute of Nuclear Power
Engineering, BUET; Nominations and Appointment Chair, IEEE Bangladesh Section, 2018 Education
Chair, IEEE Humanitarian Activities Committee conducted a session on "Research Methodology -
Continuation of Research besides Corporate Life." He tried to imbibe the passion for research in the
attending students and inspired them to start early. In his talk he further presented the ways and tools
that one would need in order to publish research papers and further develop the correct mindset
required to pursue research in future. In this session there was an interactive part in which the attendees
got together in groups and discussed about their research areas and interests. The session ended at 1.30
PM. There was a lunch break after this session.
The first post lunch session started at 2:30 PM. It was conducted by Mr. S. M. Farhaduzzaman Azad,
Sub-Divisional Engineer, P.W.D. He shared his insight regarding government jobs for engineers. He
shed lights on the importance of young Bangladeshi engineers joining the government workforce. His
session was lighthearted with stories from his life working as a government employee.
The next session, started at 3:00 PM was an interactive session taken by Shams Shad Islam Khan
System Engineer, Bangla Phone Limited and Student Activity Coordinator at IEEE Bangladesh
Section. He conducted a small interactive game, in which all the attendees were given a form with
multiple blank spaces, with a heading that specified a particular criteria. Each of the blank spaces were
to be filled up by the signature of any of the attendees who fulfilled that criteria. The interactive session
gave the participants a platform to get to know the other participants in the room from different parts of
Bangladesh.
At 3:30 PM Zafir Shafiee Chowdhury, Director, Bondstein Technologies Ltd, conducted a session on
the future of technologies and inspired attendees about the potential of IoT, Blockchain technology and
Experience based technology in the future. His session was very much thought provoking and he tried
to bring out the visionary in everyone.
At 4.00 PM Md. Sayfullah, CEO of SinePulse GmbH, Munich, Germany, CEO of AplombTech BD,
Bangladesh, CTO of Gridpal GmbH, Germany, Consultant at Intel Mobile Communication, Munich,
Germany started his session on building a career abroad, away from his country, in a strange, new city
and then later returning to Bangladesh to start something on his own. His session was very inspiring for
young engineers dreaming to make a difference in this world. The session ended at 5.15 PM.
The next session was conducted by A R M Abdullah Rocky, IT Specialist Engineering, Banglalink
Digital Communications Ltd. The theme of his session was people skills. He discussed at length not
only on how to communicate with people but also how to connect to people. He shared some helpful
tips for working as team and effective ways of leading a team.
The speaker of the last session of this year’s SPAC was Prof. Dr. Celia Shahnaz, Professor, Department
of EEE, BUET; Chair, IEEE Bangladesh Section. Her session was titled "Humanitarian Technology for
Sustainable Development Goals." She discussed on the effectiveness of IEEE SIGHT as a platform for
humanitarian activities and encouraged students to collaborate on various projects on the platform. Her
whole session was devoted to use of technology in the humanitarian field which inspired the students to
use their technological knowledge to work towards fulfilling the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
She encouraged the participant to participate in the activities and projects related to humanitarian
technology and discussed about the sustainable development goals and the past and ongoing projects
on humanitarian technology in different parts of the world.
The conference ended with photo session and networking session. Refreshments were served to the
participants at the end.
