Nokia Bell Labs Shannon Luminary Lecture - The Future of AI and Human Society: Human AI
In honor of Claude Shannon – the father of information theory and arguably of all communications and networked systems – Bell Labs has created the Shannon Luminary Lecture Series and Award, to explore all topics of high impact and relevance to the future of human existence, with an annual series of ten talks by the leading visionary researchers, developers, thinkers and entrepreneurs from all fields of scientific, technological, engineering, mathematical, or related artistic endeavor.
The October 2018 lecture will be given by Alex (Sandy) Pentland. He currently directs the MIT Connection Science and Human Dynamics Labs and previously helped create and direct the MIT Media Lab. He is one of the most-cited computational scientists in the world, a member of the U.S. National Academies, and has received numerous awards and prizes such as the McKinsey Award from Harvard Business Review, the DARPA Network Challenge, and the Brandeis Award for work in privacy. His most recent books are Social Physics (Penguin Press) and Honest Signals (MIT Press).
Abstract - AI is most often thought of as creating artificial humans, which raises the question of AI replacing humans. But if we ask how to build an intelligent system that incorporates both humans and AIs, we will find that there is a (relatively) clean formalism for building such a hybrid. Moreover, there are already early examples of such systems that feel not only human and natural but even positively delightful.
The presentation will be held in the Hamming Innovation Hall on the Murray Hill Bell Labs Campus.
Prior awardees include Eric Schmidt, Irwin Jacobs, Bob Metcalfe, Amber Case, Henry Markram, Zhenan Bao, Yann LeCun, David Eagleman, Stephen Friend, Brian Collins, and Vint Cerf.
As space is limited, please confirm your attendance as soon as possible. Registration will close as soon as the capacity of the Hamming Innovation Hall has been reached. Please register using the link
