On June 24, 2013, Futurewei (Huawei) Technologies, and Photonics Society Chapter and Pre-College Activities Committee of IEEE North Jersey Section will jointly sponsor the following

Abstract: We, the students from the FIRST Robotics Competition Team 303, housed at Bridgewater-Raritan High School (BRHS), built a robot using extruded aluminum and corrugated plastic, among other materials to participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). FRC is an international high school robotics competition organized by FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). Each year, teams of high school students compete to build robots that can complete a defined task, which changes every year. This year, the task was to design a robot that can shoot Frisbees into a series of elevated goals ranging from around 2ft off the ground to 9ft, as well as climb a pyramid composed of three layers with a goal on top. Our robot was capable of shooting into the highest goal from across the field, sitting at the loading station, and climbing 30 inch layer of the pyramid.

Our robot’s shooter is comprised of a CIM motor with a max RPM of 2665. It is comprised of a six-wheel, two-speed, four-CIM powered drive base, and was programmed in LabView, which runs on National Instruments’ cRio FPGA. The robot features a pneumatic piston to angle the chassis for close range shooting and passive climbing. After participating in several district competitions and a regional competition in the Tri-State area, our team qualified for the FIRST World Championships, which was held in St. Louis, Missouri at the end of April 2013. After several days of competing with 400 of the world’s best robotics teams, we finished the tournament by winning its Division, and ranking 3rd in the world. We would like to bring our robot, share our experience and demonstrate its capabilities. To learn more about FIRST and our Team 303, please visit www.usfirst.org and www.team303.com
