Lecture on "Industrial Drives & Automation"
A Guest lecture on Industrial Drives & Automation was organised by department of electrical and electronics engineering under IEEE Student Branch, Vignan’s Institute of Information Technology on 5th February 2019. Mr.M.Ayyadurai, Deputy General Manager, RINL, Visakhapatnam delivered his lecture to Second year EEE students.
The resource person spoke about use of automation in integrated plants like vizag steel plant. Supporting this statement, he described the process of how the raw iron ore/ steel are dumped into the receiving bins from the wagons/lorries where the entire unit is emptied on to conveyor belts which is fully automatic. Sensors detect the presence of material in the yard and that will initiate the entire conveyor unit running for around 20kms in the plant. He briefed students about the particular usage of each drive in industrial application. He emphasized on usage of DC drives for rolling mills where a big log of steel rod is forged into a small steel wires which are used for domestic construction. He spoke about how regenerative braking is employed in EOT cranes while lowering the load. Addition to this, he described about 30MW thermal power plant and application of mega watt Synchronous motors employed as compressors for blast furnace and for power factor correction.
